people walk and talk
and my mind slowly empties
around Walden Pond

his back to traffic
the hitchhiker walks the road
arm outstretched

cat walks by a wall
stops to look at its shadow
then continues on

the stone mason
bends under the spirit level
and creates a wall

what’s left over
becomes artful –
drop cloth

antique show –
a faded Amish bonnet
holds its shape

in the formal garden
the haiku poet bends down –
small wild mushroom

New Year’s Eve –
unaware of the ice
I catch my breath

rearranged at home
flowers from the funeral
come to life

a young boy
adds the finishing touches –
lemonade stand

off duty
she’s nonchalant –
the crossing guard

old broom
picks up dust
and gives some back

for the housecat
even the dripping faucet
is of interest

in her red beret
the old woman makes change –
U-Pick Apples

on top of their shed
that much closer to heaven
two goats

the leaf-blower man
turns to walk away
the leaves follow him

on the East Side
a dachshund in a sweater
worried

canvasbacks
in the pouring rain
sleeping

late summer visit
hosts tire of entertaining –
how balmy the day

spring in the marsh –
behind the photographer
two swans landing

next to their greenhouse
out for a breath of fresh air
bonsai trees
