out on the dock
two friends fall silent –
September sun

one by one
the seeds of the sunflower
are carried away

on the still green lawn
a few red leaves
begin to dance

milkweed floss
hung up in dry weeds
shines in the sun

a familiar figure
crosses the lawn –
autumn dusk

a spider’s bridge thread
from one tree to another
catches the sunlight

within the beech trees
a partridge takes flight
then another

between
two pines
half moon

through the parking lot
guided by the autumn wind
empty shopping cart

the walk home
is in the dark –
roots on the path

first frost –
stuck to the lawn
wooden clothespin

far into the woods
where leaves cover the ground
the path disappears

the colors of fall
caught in beveled glass –
gun cabinet

apple orchard –
trees all different
and the same

wetter still
the watering can –
November rain

rusted Swiss cowbells
hang near the back door
still speak of the wind

through the fog
appearing disappearing
snow geese

out in the cold wind
I walk into my shadow
my back warm
